Power Gem Locations

After you are capable of accessing the Spirit Island in the Southwest Quadrant of the sea, you will be able to bring your spirit gems to the spring in the hopes of powering up your fairies. Fairies will only power up at 10 and 20 gem intervals.

This guide is to acquire all of the Power Gems for Leaf, the Spirit of Power. Her first power up will give your sword a boosted attack power wrapping the blad in flames, while the second boost will make it even stronger, totally engulfing the sword in flames. More often than not, Leaf's power gems will be seem to be the easiest to obtain for most players. I cannot lie, this guide was made with great help from the official strategy guide because it was done in exactly the same format that I would have done it in, ordered in first moment of being able to obtain them with requirements listed to reach it. However, I have expanded on other things not mentioned in the guide.

Power Gem #1 - Mercay Island Shop
Requirements: 500 Rupees

From the moment you first enter into the Mercay Island Shop, this Power Gem will be sitting there, ready for purchase. However, it costs an amazing 500 Rupees. Don't be in a hurry to buy it as it doesn't go anywhere. Wait until you've collected nine others or are financial stable enough to risk it.

Power Gem #2 - Isle of Ember
Requirements: Conquer Temple of Fire

After you have successfully freed Leaf, the Spirit of Power, from the first dungeon, Astrid will give you this gem as a token of appreciation. Be sure to talk to her as soon as you have beaten the temple!

Power Gem #3 - Cannon Island
Requirements: Access to the Bomb Garden

Once you have entered the Temple of the Ocean King for the second time, you will have need of a Cannon. The game's progression naturally takes you through to be able to access the Bomb Garden. Enter the cavern and go to the far west end of the cave. You will see a chest in a small opening. Use a bomb nearby to blast a hole in the south wall to access this chest which contains one of the gems.

Power Gem #4 - Isle of Gust
Requirements: None

On the Isle of Wind, the spot on the map is three tiers up from your ship on a west most ledge in a chest. More specifically, reach the location that I like to call the "Field of Wind Holes" and cross over to a cliff. Dig up the wind hole in front of the cliff and use it to be raised up onto the ledge and to reach the chest.

Power Gem #5 - Temple of Wind
Requirements: None

In a chest on B2 of the Temple of Wind. In the room with the huge man-eating worms, cross over to the left wall and the chest is sitting there in plain sight. Be sure not to miss it or get eaten while trying to reach it.

Power Gem #6 - Mercay Island
Requirements: Conquer Temple of Wind

After you have conquered the Temple of Wind, revisit Oshus back in his house on Mercay Island. Speak with him and he will award you with this gem for having rescued Neri, the Spirit of Wisdom.

Power Gem #7 - Mercay Island
Requirements: Bombs

Just outside of the Temple of the Ocean King, go down the steps and to the right. Just before you switch screens you should notice a large cracked wall. Bomb it open and enter the cave. Inside the cave jump from platform to platform over the lake until you come to a chest at the end. Open the chest to receive the gem.

Power Gem #8 - Temple of the Ocean King
Requirements: None

On Floor B4, defeat all of the Phantom Eyes to reveal the chest. The Phantom Eyes are those annoying plant looking creatures with tons of eyes and annoying ring that alerts nearby Phantoms to your presence. Be careful! The chest appears on the right hand side of the room.

Power Gem #9 - Temple of Courage
Requirements: Bombs

While it will initially take some getting to, after you can access it, go up to the northwest corner of 1F. You will see two stone tablets and a wall but on your map there is a room walled off just above it. In between the stone tablets place a bomb. This will open up an entrance to two chests. While the right one contains a ship part, the left one contains a Power Gem.

Power Gem #10 - Temple of Courage
Requirements: Bow

In the southern section of Floor 2F, ride the platforms and shoot an arrow into two open eyes to reveal a chest in the center of the room. Ride another platform backtracking in order to reach the newly revealed chest and to claim your prize of another Power Gem.

Power Gem #11 - Temple of the Ocean King
Requirements: Bow

Once you have the Bow, revisit the third floor of the Temple of the Ocean King. Get on top of the bottom right platform (you can either press a switch to remove the flames or you can use your shovel to open a wind hole). At the right hand corner you will see an eye on the wall. Shoot an arrow into the wall and a chest will appear just to the left of the three Triforce pedastals.

Power Gem #12 - Goron Island
Requirements: Bombs

In the Goron Maze, though it takes some work getting to it. First you have to press the floor switch that you can reach easily by entering the maze and veering to the left and following the walls. Now, work your way out of the maze, but go down following the west wall and you will see another path back in towards the maze. Follow it and you will reach the chest. Remember - pay attention to what's on your screen and where it corresponds with your map! That map really does make life much easier.

Power Gem #13 - Isle of Frost
Requirements: Grappling Hook

Once you have conquered the Temple of Ice, use your newly acquired Grappling Hook around the screen just south of the temple. Use the hook to reach a chest on a an upper-right ledge (the most northern chest, too).

Power Gem #14 - Molida Island
Requirements: Grappling Hook

Now that you have your Grappling Hook, it's time to go back and revisit various islands as you can reach areas you haven't been before. Go to Molida Island first. Re-enter the cave behind Romano's house. Jump across the platforms but before you jump off the last one, use your Grappling Hook to latch onto a chest which is the very chest that contains your Power Gem!

Power Gem #15 - Spirit Island
Requirements: Grappling Hook

Ever wonder what else was hidden on the Spirit Island aside from that mysterious pool? Time to investigate! Use the Grappling Hook to explore the island further. The chest that contains your Power Gem is on the highest ledge at the end.

Power Gem #16 - Bannan Island
Requirements: Grappling Hook

Visit the strange Bannan's island. On your map you will notice a small souther island. Use your Grappling Hook on the chest to shoot over to the island. While you are there and since you have nothing else to do - open the chest and claim your Power Gem!

Power Gem #17 - Temple of the Ocean King
Requirements: Grappling Hook

Visit B7 in the Ocean King's Temple. Use the moving platforms to reach the northmost part of the room. Use your Grappling Hook on a chest to the right (the chest contains the round stone). Next, use your Hook again on a peg to pull yourself to the right again. Being mindful of the patroling Phantom, climb onto another nearby peg and use your Hook or Boomerang or Bow to shoot a crystal on a high platform. Hitting it will reveal a chest to the south. However, it's a timed crystal so you have to be quick to reach the chest while watching out for the Phantom! Reach the chest in time to claim your prize: another Power Gem.

Power Gem #18 - Isle of the Dead
Requirements: Shovel, Bombs

The game's normal progression should lead you here, but just in case. Follow the directions given in McNey's journal: from the sacred tree west 13, north 7. Dig up this spot to reveal an underground cave. Bomb the north wall to reveal a chamber with a stone tablet, Rupees, and a chest which contains a Power Gem.

Power Gem #19 - Isle of Ruins
Requirements: Drain the Isle

After you have drained the Island of all its water and revealed the lower levels, hop down into the maze at the southwest end of the island. Exit the maze at the upper right end and go up a screen. You'll reach a dead end but the chest containing a Power Gem sits here and is well worth the wasted trip.

Power Gem #20 - Postbox Anywhere
Requirements: Conquer Mutoh's Temple

After you have successfully secured the final precious metal, be sure to visit a Postbox! A letter will arrive for you from King Mutoh (uhh... no, I won't ask). In the letter, King Mutoh thanks you and gives you your last Power Gem with his sincerest gratitude. (Ok... seriously, how did he have this AND send it through the mail when he's a GHOST! But beyond that, why didn't he just give it to you along with the Precious Metal? *sigh*)
